INTRODUCTION
In our time driven by antibiotics and cortisone, which we are paying dearly for their relative efficiency, our immune system, exposed to numerous stresses, needs targeted and natural support, in order to complete its protective function against poisons and noxious rays that are troubling our food and environment.
In the past, used as a laxative and worm powder, in powdered dry extract, aloe, is used today in fresh gel or juice, heals all kinds of pains, stimulates athletes (warming-up), and is a compound of many cosmetics. This hardy and outstanding resistant plant enriches the family first aid kits of one of these almost-panaceas, as it rarely exists.

ADVANCED RESEARCH
Advanced scientific research confirms empirical knowledge and innocuousness of Aloe. For example, the Alacala University of Henarez, Madrid, one of the oldest European universities, is making studies about different enzymes found in the Aloe Vera juice and their implications in its therapeutic properties, researching the anti-protease actions (Pharmacology department) and the therapeutic properties associated with enzymes (Plant physiology department).
Other studies by prestigious universities have been published to underline the advantages of Aloe in external or internal use:
University of Texas USA (Medical Branch), University of Texas Health Sci. Center (USA), Fujita Health University (Japan), Tokyo’s Women Medical College (Japan), Nagasaki University (Japan), Ben Gurion University of Negev (Israel)...

250 SPECIES
This plant is often confused with agave (cactaceae family) but aloe belongs to the liliaceous family(notably garlic) succulent (save water in its leaves).
The plant produces 2 different juices: the resinous sap, yellowish and bitter, and the thick translucent inner pulp.

Most of aloes are of African origins but also from Arabia, Madagascar and Yemeni Sokotra.
Aloes family consists in more than 250 species of which only a few are of medicinal use (aloe socotrina, with red flowers, very valued in the past; African aloe, the most widespread until recently; Barbadensis Aloe, with green or blue leaves depending on the variety, which ousted the African; aloe ferox and aloe saponaria widely used (cooking, drinks and medicinal preparations) in the Far East, and aloe arborescens, wild medicinal aloe used by the Russians. In Western Europe, aloe vera is used in pharmacology as well as in dieting and cosmetics.

PLANT OF IMMORTALITY
Aloe “Plant of immortality” for the great priests of ancient Egypt, was known since antiquity in all regions of the world.
The first traces of its therapeutic use are found with the Sumerians, then with the Egyptians, the Chinese, the Jews, the Greeks (Sokotra island was not conquered by Alexander for strategy but to supply enough aloe leaves to his armies and his military expeditions), and the Romans and the American indians!
Ayurvedic medicine says it restores the balance between the 3 Doshas (Kapha, Vata and Pitta) and the Muslims hang leaves at the entrance of their houses because the leaves represent perfect happiness.
The medical writings of Hippocrates, Aristotle, Celsius, Dioscoride, Pliny the Old, Galen, Paracelse, praise its qualities.
From the middle of the 19th century, modern science seized this prodigious plant. In 1851, Smith and Stenhouse identify the active ingredient: aloin, believed to be the source of the plant’s purgative power.

But in 1912, Johnstone discovered that the pulp could also heal burns, and in 1930, Collins proved that aloe could reduce the noxious effect of radiations.
Then, the medical and scientific world studied very seriously the chemical composition and in 1938, Chopia and Gosh isolated its main active ingredients.
In 1942, Stockton stabilized the aloe gel and created an excellent ointment for burns. But it is in 1959 that Coats made a decisive discovery by stabilizing naturally the fresh pulp of the plant.
Aloe vera was successful in America only when scientists found out that many survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasakihealed their skin with the inner gel of aloe and drunk the juice specifically prepared. The number of skin cancers within the Japanese was lower than the probable forecast after such a nuclear attack…

aloe barbadensis
Since then, there has been more and more research: first Danhof demonstrated that the aloe gel could re-hydrate and considerably slow the skin aging, then Fujita discovered that bradykinase was a compound of the plant, a pain killerenzyme, calming and healing. Many more researchers revealed the diverse therapeutic properties of aloes and notably its antiviral power.

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES: The extraordinary composition of aloes
- First it is rich in polysaccharides (acemannan), lignin, saponin (antimycotic power, anti-cholesterol, glucose regulator), and anthraquinone among which some have antibiotics power (barbaloin, isobarbaloin, aloetic acid, aloe emodine), or calming, anaesthetic or analgesic (cinnamic acid ester, ether oil, isobarbaloin, salicylic acid) or fungicidal(cinnamic acid, chrysophanic acid), anti-carcinogen (bio and isoflavinoid)
- It contains Tannin: (having the electrostatic charge of virus clouds, and magnetic style fractures)
- It also contains numerous vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, folic acid, B12, C, E and choline, inositol, niacin (metabolism regulator)...
- As well as minerals: calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iron, sodium, chlorine, manganese, magnesium, copper, chromium, zinc, selenium (anti free radicals)
- Enzymes of which some help digestion (cellulase, lipase, amylase, protease) or regulate hepatic functions (phosphatase alkaline), others stimulate the immune system (bradykinase), or help support the life of muscles (creatine phosphokinase)...
- And finally amino acids of which, among the essentials are isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, valine… and essential fatty acids.
- Aloisides A and B partially variable (structure can be compared to neurotransmitters: according to Filatow et Pawlenko, MD).
All of these compounds are found in aloe in minimal quantities but in a balanced ratio.
In the past, it was usually the pinkish sap exuded through the aloe leaves that were used for therapeutic needs. But, the sap was used for its cholagogue, stomachic, laxative and purgative virtues, whereas nowadays the gel used is disinfectant astringent, antitussive, healing fungicidal, anti-inflammatory, haemostatic and virucidal.
Diseases, drug use and indisposition are causing troubles in the enzymatic breakdown, causing metabolism troubles and favouring other diseases.

Aloe is a first class biological regulator by helping the enzyme production, therefore reinforces the general immune system (helps build antibodies), and the metabolism (digestion: the enzymatic breakdown makes the food compounds soluble in water and transportable).
Because 80% of immunity depends on the intestine, aloe allows the end of this vicious circle.

As external use, it anaesthetizes the tissues, and therefore stops pain and itching. Also, the aloe vera pulp is a very complete energetic food. Finally, in dermatology, it revitalizes the tissues...

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS AND THEIR USE
Polysaccharides:
They have anti-inflammatory properties, stimulate the formation of lymphocytes and fibroblasts in the skin and in the conjunctive tissues (healing). It also slows the bacteria proliferation and noxious fungi. Besides, anti-oedematouseffect of polysaccharides has been observed on humans, probably due to their capacity to retain water.
Back to properties/composition
Acemannan:
They are complex polysaccharides found only in aloes, ginseng, shiitake mushrooms, shark cartilage powder, milk-vetch (Chinese herb) and eleutherococcus.
Until puberty, the body naturally makes it. After this growing period, this substance should be taken as a supplement (See DHEA).
Acemannan reinforces the immune system by activating phagocytes, antibodies and killer cells. Besides this substance helps the breaking up in the large intestine of foreign proteins, which are often the cause of allergies. This is a major function in strengthening the cell immune system. Acemannan protects the white corpuscles. Many American researchers are trying to find if acemannan can force the protein envelop of cancerous cells.
Back to properties/composition
Minerals and trace elements
These elements commands the water secretion, muscle contraction, nerve stimulation, bone constituents, teeth, hormones and enzymes, all being lost during diarrhea and intense transpiration and should be replaced.
Trace elements, mineral salts and vitamins should always be in a balanced ratio, which is the case of natural products such as the aloes sap.
More and more, homeopathic and allopathic doctors agree that the body absorb better natural elements than synthesized elements.
Back to properties/composition
Vitamins
A part from few exceptions, the body cannot produce them on its own. If some vitamins are missing, all the metabolism processes are affected.

IMMUNE SYSTEM AND ALLERGIES
Aloes helps support a healthy immune system (better resistance towards infections when used along with natural vitamin C) and accelerate the healing of general wounds or wounds after surgeries.
ALLERGIES
In all allergy cases, the immune system reacts excessively and violently to non-dangerous and usually harmless substances such as: cat hair, microscopic defecation, acarids, lactose from cow milk, pollens.... not counting complex allergies that are difficult to identify (and avoid).
Allergic diseases are on the rise notably because of a weakened immunity (environment, life conditions, bad diets).
- To prevent allergies, it is counselled to breast feed newborns and to never smoke in enclosed space with infants, toddlers and children. The living space should be kept clean of allergens: eating according to the season, choosing whole food and avoiding a large choice of exotic food. Keeping the home (especially the bedroom) clean of allergens (avoid rugs and furniture with noxious varnishes).

Juices, aloe ferox and aloe vera fresh pulp have often been used with success in treating all kinds of allergies. The therapeutic substances, among others, are the polysaccharides (general support of the immune system) and the g-sitosterol fatty acid (B) (raising the tolerance threshold).
..
AIDS
Today, some seropositive individuals are drinking aloe vera and aloe ferox juices in large quantities because we believe it can slow the breaking of diseases. Exact doses are being established. An American study using the country’s aloe vera analysed a (very small) number of patients with AIDS symptoms, and showed that the evolution of the disease is slowed and bettered. These patients were suffering less of the typical symptoms of the disease than the others...

DERMATOLOGY
SKIN CARE AND HYGIENE
The body’s largest organ: skin, it protects internal organs against external stress, viruses, bacteria, fungus and UV rays.
Skin is structured in 3 layers:
- epidermis: first protective barrier from outside (with the stratum corneum), thermal regulation
- dermis: sensory organ, feeds the epidermis
- hypodermis: water reservoir acting as an insulation layer.
Most cosmetics work only at the epidermis level. Conventional cosmetologists tried to use "carriers", specific transport mechanism of active ingredients towards the deep skin layers (liposome).

Aloe gel, which does not have this artificial liposome membrane, still has natural transport mechanism able to travel through deeper skin layers of healthy or broken skin. Working directly on collagen, aloe gel procures skin elasticity. The large number of complex polysaccharides is able to hold large quantities of water (hydrating effect), smoothening the skin and giving skin elasticity, reducing wrinkles. Although it penetrates the deep layers, the aloe gels create a hydrating layer on the skin protecting against the wind, salt, sun or dirt.
To help regenerate the skin (anti free radical effect), it is better to apply the aloe gel before or instead of night skin cream and make sure that it penetrates the skin well before applying other creams or ampules.
..

ATOPIC ECZEMA

Serious disease with violent and repetitive crisis. The skin is broken and no longer protects. In order to attenuate the itching and to protect against infections due to the broken skin, doctors prescribe cortisone based creams. The skin usually becomes too thin and loses its elasticity.
If dermatologists believe it is an incurable disease, natural therapists consider that it is like an autoimmune disease.
Anyone, no matter how old can suffer with atopic eczema. Genetic predisposition can be a main factor but a longer breastfeed can protect a child. Among other things, a very weak immune system or an allergy can trigger atopic eczema. In the intestine, there are 400 kinds of bacteria balanced between “good” and “bad” ones. The rising number of atopic eczema could be due to dysbiosis (imbalance in the intestinal flora). Psychological state, metabolism, environment and diet could also be a factor.

An aloe ferox or aloe vera and aloe gel high dosed treatment (to be individually evaluated) could be beneficial in the case of atopic eczema and other eczema like skin disorders. The cooling and hydrating effect soothe immediately the itching, renew the broken skin and the deeper cells. It is necessary to complement with evening primrose, calendula, beta-carotene or natural vitamin A based cream or fatty oil.

PSORIASIS
This incurable disease is usually internal and external. The treatment can only concern the symptoms. Many who drank a lot of aloe juice and applied the gel several times a day could find relief.
SUN BURNS
Aloe gel stimulates the skin pigmentation cells (melanin) and therefore the tanning. In case of long sun exposure, Aloe gel helps avoid redness and blisters.
In the case of serious sunburn, it is necessary to seek medical treatment in order to avoid the warming up of burned cells, which could kill the healthy surrounding cells.
BURNS
Burns gravity can be divided in 4 categories. Apart from the pain and the wounds, there is always a risk of microbial cross infection that can reach the internal organs. Aloe gel is useful for emergency care by immediately reducing the pain, lowering the risk of infection and healing the wound.
Burns, broken skin, insect bites: stabilized aloe gel or fresh pulp.
ACNE
Acne is caused by deep infections of pores obstructed with sebum. Controlling the acne in the long term means a careful and regular skin cleansing depending on the skin type, a mainly vegetarian healthy diet with whole food.
Acne, dermatosis, seborrhea, herpes, rosacea, ringworm and cold sores: stabilized aloe gel (with low percentage of bitter substances) has an antiseptic effect without drying.

WOUNDS HEALING
Skin infections and wounds can be avoided with the active ingredients of aloe. It creates a thin protective layer at the surface of wounds that stops the proliferation of stressful microorganisms. Only the aloe gel with all of its active ingredients can really help the healing of wounds. The gels from the fresh leaves contain all the healing substances and the necessary biological activity.
SKIN CANCER
Various testimonials in the world attest of the symptomatic relief of skin cancer if the aloe gel is applied several times a day.
STRETCH MARKS

Aloe gel helps avoiding very efficiently stretch marks (pregnancy, birth).

SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS (SLE):
The story of Rita Thomson Lupus, Aloe vera and me – book out of print

Rita Thompson, a 35-year-old American living in Ohio, was suffering since 1966 with psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. In 1980, her health was getting worse, the hospital diagnosis was SLE on all of her body. The disease damages the tissues, bloats and stretches, cause depression, oozing rashes on the skin and even the face… Despite all the treatments and drugs she received, it only became worse.
«To treat the disease, the doctors gave me stronger and stronger doses of steroids and other drugs. Everyday flares and wellness periods were a non-stop battle. Once I was in stable condition… in some way, I was accepting my condition; I could leave the hospital for 6 months. But I was living in the fear of when the “monster” would come again. »
In the fall of 1982, Rita reached the worst of her suffering: in 2 weeks, her body damaged with tumours and bared flesh, was not recognizable. No more treatment or drug were working. The blood pressure was uncontrollable. She developed eyesight and otitis problems on top of the SLE. Extremely weak, in full depression, Rita was desperate and was thinking about ending her life…
Believing an article from the National Geographic Magazine about the remarkable properties of Aloes, Rita, although not sure, drank everyday up to 1dl of aloe juice.

In 2 to 3 weeks, her state became notably better. She regained some energy. Her red or brown marks diminished little by little, the scabs disappeared. Even her hair grew again, baby’s hair at first then normally. Almost deaf and blind, Rita relieved her eyes and cleared her ears from the scabs with the Aloe vera activator, which allowed her to have the cataract surgery and be able to wear glasses.
In less than a year, Rita Thompson’s health was spectacularly better, astonishing the doctors. She could finally lead a normal life, she kept only few after-effects: minute traces of the awful scars, which disappeared with the time...

OTHERS
ORL
Aloe is efficient for throat affections or ear pain.
MOUTH AND GUM MUCOUS MEMBRANES
In the case of inflammation, bleeding, or fungus, aloe based massages are recommended (aloe pulp and honey mixed together, or propolis-aloe toothpaste, with an extra-soft brush). A mouthwash after dentist intervention helps. Aloe vera based lipstick may heal lip breaks.
EYES
To treat various eye affections: wash the eye with fresh aloe juice diluted with spring water, or use distilled aloe drops.
HAIR

- Dandruffs: daily rubs with aloe pulp, or with an aloe gel based preparation.
Dandruff shampoos sold in shops contain mercuric sulphide which could cause hair loss. Aloes helps to consider and treat internal causes:

DANDRUFFS AND ALOE GEL(answer to a reader’s question)
Dandruffs are usually caused after
Aloes:
-aggressive shampoodrying the scalp
-bacteriologic infection due to the
malfunction of sebaceous glands
-heavy stress or bad diet

ATTENTION: How to buy it?
Today aloes farming –popular medicine plant– is widespread in the major parts of Mexico and North America, thanks to the American marketing experts.

ATTENTION: packaging is important, quality and purity of aloe can vary greatly depending on the product, beginning with the specie, wild or large-scale farming (Hawaii).
Large American companies sell enormous quantities of aloes in all kinds of presentation. It is the reason for many aloes based product to be of lower quality even when there is the 100% pure label (superstores, drug stores…).
Therefore, aloe vera powder can actually contain up to 80% of other cheaper powders such as lactose or starch. Sometimes malto-dextrin is used, raising the polysaccharide content, which breaks the balance of the product. The efficiency of the active ingredients is therefore almost completely lost.

Pharmaceutical aloe (including the Cape, Succotrina, Curacao variety, etc…) and medical preparations (tinctures, etc..) made from the SAP can cause different troubles such as diarrhea, heart disorders, varix, haemorrhoids, and are not at all for pregnant women...
NB: homeopathic aloes are made from pharmaceutical preparations.

Only the ones made from FRESH WHOLE LEAVES, have no adverse effects.

Fresh gel and juice contain unaltered active ingredients and they should be preferred over concentrates, dry or pulverized powders. Pure products will be more efficient than mixes. They are often found in organic stores because:
